So what if we use characters others made? So have many novelists before they broke into professional writing. So have many television writers. (Did you think the creator wrote every episode on their own?) Just because I'm a fan artist doesn't mean I'm not an artist!

That is true. Even if it is fanart, the artist puts a lot of work and love into that drawing! If that's not art, then I don't know what is.
Besides, drawing fanart saves time so you don't have to think over how you want a person to look.
